XAN Mongolian Barbeque

Located in Beacon Hill, Calgary, XAN Mongolian Barbeque offers visitors a new approach to the Mongolian style grill. It offers a high end dining experience with sophisticated interior styling.

The Challenge

BOND Creative was approached by the owners of XAN Mongolian Barbeque
to develop:

A brand with a sophisticated, modern feel to match the restaurant’s interiors
Marketing and advertising collateral
Menu and stationery design
Exterior and interior restaurant signage

Actions

Brand Creation

The restaurant's name XAN comes from the word Xanadu – a summer palace considered to be Genghis Khan’s vision of heaven. This heavenly vision became a point of inspiration for the development of the XAN logo. The flame symbol seen on the logo was inspired by the Mongolian flag and became a natural icon for the restaurant. A modern typeface was then selected to reflect the restaurant’s contemporary interiors.

Design Development

When developing the design for the menu and marketing collateral, we created a Mongolian feel by adding simple textures and graphics to the background with an Asian flair. We then used an elegant, classic typeface for an upscale look and to reinforce the refined dining experience.

Exterior Signage

The exterior signage application required a strong street presence in order to compete with other retailers in the area. A large scale, three dimensional logo was designed and applied directly to the front and sides of the building. The flame symbol was built with a red halo edge lighting effect to further reinforce this aspect of the logo.

Results

The owners of XAN Mongolian Barbeque are thrilled with their new identity, menu and signage. They feel that the brand really speaks to who they are: a refined, contemporary restaurant with Mongolian flair.
